ICHC 2013 and the future of Agostinho bicycle museum

Dr. Ana Santos and her team organized the XXIVth International Cycling History Conference  (ICHC2013) in Lisbon, Portugal (May 15-17th.). A lot of information and interesting places were ready to a visit. I would like to invite you for small overview by my pictures.

Joaquim Agostinho museum - Torres Vedras, Portugal

The museum will be born in the old facilities of Casa Hipolito (disabled industry in Torres Vedras), particularly in the building that served as a canteen, which is listed as heritage of municipant interest due to its architecture. People participat ICHC 2013 (Internation Cycling History Conference) were first visitors of this musem and the organizer showed their idea to all. They would be happy when the new cycling musem would be open during two years.

Joaquim Agostinho - the best portuguese cyclist ever

He participated 13 times in the Tour de France and in 1978 and 1979 he achieved the best result, ranking third.

In 1979, 10 years after his debut in the Tour, Joaquim Agostinho reached the biggest achievement of his career, winning the mythical stage of Alpe d'Huez.

On April 30th 1884, while disputing 5th lap of  X Tour Algarve, Joaquim suffered a head trauma in an accident caused by a dog crossed the road. With the yellow jersey on, he rode his bike again and crossed the finish line with help of two colleagues from team. He had a surgery 10 hours after the accident and stayed in a coma for 10 days, fighting against death, which ultimately defeated him on May 10th 1884.

The National sport museum was opened in July 2012 when Portugal celebrated 100 year anniversary first attendance portugese athletes on Olympic games.

Museu do Caramulo, Caramulo - Portugal

The Car Collection in the Museum Caramulo has additional nice collection of bicycles. The collection has grown ever since and is on show in the museum, because the historic building has fantastic atmosphere.

Museu do Caramulo - the cars and motorcycles

Two brothers, Abel and Joao de Lacerda founded in the 1950's, a unusual museum in a small town called Caramulo, situated on a mountain in the center of Portugal with a luxuriant vegetation overlooking an 80 km valley: the vastest panoramic view of the country.

With the premature death of Abel de Lacerda in 1957, the Fundaçao Abel de Lacerda was created – today Fundaçao Abel e Joao de Lacerda – the institution that runs the Museu do Caramulo, with both buildings for Art and Automobiles, open to the public all year round. More than one million visitors have come to the Museu do Caramulo in its fifty years of existence.

Museu Nacional dos Coches - Lisboa, Portugal

The National Coach Museum (Portuguese: Museu Nacional dos Coches) is located in the Belém district of Lisbon, in Portugal. The museum has one of the finest collections of historical carriages in the world, being one of the most visited museums of the city.
